Nikki Nightingale's Nest
Nikki Nightingale needs your students’ help to make her nest neat! Each student will take a turn flying Nikki Nightingale to find a noodle, nickel, or even a nail. As they find the objects beginning with the letter Nn, they will also find that the letter Nn makes the /n/ sound.
Let’s make a noodle necklace! Help your students string noodles and other objects that start with the letter Nn to make a necklace. As they string the noodles, your students will practice the /n/ sound made by the letter Nn.
The Nightingale by Hans Christian Andersen, Jerry Pinkney (A nightingale remains faithful to the king over the years.)
Title: Noodle Necklace
Description: Give each student string, noodles, Nn pictures, and capital and lowercase Nn cards. Encourage students to say the name of each Nn picture as they string it on the necklace. When students have finished, help them tie their necklaces around their necks.
Title: Need an Nn
Description: Give each student their own paper letter Nn with a piece of tape on the back. Label objects in the room that begin in Nn with word cards, and point these objects out before you begin. Announce that one of the objects “needs an Nn”. The students move quickly to stick their paper Nns on that object, and will stay by that object until the teacher announces that another Nn object “needs an Nn”.
Title: Need a Nickel
Description: Ask the students if they have ever played an arcade game like Pacman. Explain that arcade games often require money to play, and some arcades only require nickels. Set up centers that mimic arcade games that deal with the letter Nn. Give students paper circles with the letter Nn on them to be the “nickels” that allow them to play the game at each station.
Title: Naughty or Nice?
Description: Just like Santa decides whether children are on the naughty and nice list, the class will decide which kids belong on which list. Create scenarios about kids, whose names start with the letter Nn (e.g., Ned, Nancy), who do something naughty or nice that also begins with the letter Nn (e.g., napping during nursery, name-calling).
Title: Nice Name
Description: Generate a large list of names that begin with the letter Nn. Have each student select one of these names (or assign it to them) and pretend that it is their name. Have the students mingle around the classroom and introduce themselves to other students using that name. After a student introduces himself or herself, have them playfully comment say, "________, that's a nice name".
Title: Nutty Nan
Description: Create a puppet from a paper sack and introduce her as Nan, who is a little “nutty” because she needs to nibble on things that start with the letter Nn. Ask the students to think of foods or silly items that begin with Nn to feed to Nan. Provide picture cards or small objects that the students can put through Nan’s mouth.
